CHAPTER 223 & THE REDWOOD EMPIRE FOOD BANK
FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM
VVA Chapter 223 administers a food distribution program for all those in need. Joe Cholewa leads a staff of volunteers monthly at the Vets Building.
The food distribution program is especially helpful for needy families in the area. Averaging 200 to 250 families each month (1000 to 1100 people) the program is staffed by veterans, friends, and neighbors from the community. Volunteers are fortified with coffee and donuts courtesy of Chapter 223 and all are glad to give their time for such a worthy cause. The food comes from the Redwood Empire Food Bank, which receives donations from the community, vendors (restaurants, retailers, and bakeries), and the USDA. All the food groups, including fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, and canned foods are represented. There is also fresh meat and poultry. There is usually enough to provide for all who show up.
The food distribution takes place on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Rosa and is open to all in need.
